The party finally returned to Mathildeburg, the home of Imultrud, and the northern-most ally of Padua-Upon-Avon. Due to limited ration and drink on the trail, Wilhelm and Vaervenshyael were compelled to head straight to the Drunken Donkey tavern for some much needed sustenance.
At the tavern, a barmaid "helpfully" reminded Vaervenshyael that the place offered baths. It seemed weeks on the trail from Barak Varr had left a noticeable stink on the party. Vaervenshyael dismissed the suggestion until she had gotten a suitable dinner. "And, if I remember correctly, this town was covered in rats when we were here last, so I'm not sure anyone here should be talking to ME about hygiene."
A local rat-catcher (and his small but vicious dog) took exception to Vaervenshyael's statement. He came over to her table and demanded apologies for the comment. He was told to sit down and leave her alone. He would not be swayed to do so by any amount of offhand, disinterested commands. Vaervenshyael drained her cup of ale, punched the rat-catcher in the gut with her mug, and then broke the mug on his back while he was doubled over.
He was able to come to enough to dodge her next blow, causing Vaervenyshyael to punch a support beam behind him. He then sicced his dog on the elf and drew his knives.
Once the dog latched on to Vaervenshyael's ankle, and rat-catcher drew his weapons, the elf responded in earnest. She quick-drew her rapier and main gauche, and she attacked the rat-catcher with a flurry of attacks. He went down in short order with a mangled left shoulder and arm and a cut through his jaw. Death from shock and blood loss came a moment later.
The dog had been distracted (aka shot) by Wilhelm in the meanwhile. While the dog tried to get its vicious teeth into the Engineer, Vaervenshyael skewered the small beast on her rapier. She then turned to the barkeep, who had not yet delivered her ordered meal, and asked if he could cook the dog for her. The man ordered her out of the tavern.
Vaervenshyael growled and chased the man into his kitchen. The barkeep stopped to pick up 2 frying pans, but slowly backed out the rear entrance of the establishment. Vaervenshyael grabbed a chicken leg, skewered some half-cooked potatoes, and waited for the rest of the party to arrive...as they inevitably would. The doctor would want to take a look at her ankle and Tankred would be sorry he missed a good fight.
