B is for Beastmen

Image
Though there are multiple careers I could have listed for B, and some of them iconic WarHammer careers in my mind, I could not perform my first A-Z run through without listing Beastmen in the B slot. Other roleplaying games may use goblins, dragons, orcs, or stirges as their iconic baddie, but WarHammer has developed the beastman to an even higher level. Beastmen are typically shown as a cross between a human and a goat, that is a humanoid with satyr-like legs, a fanged goat face, and curling horns. However, the book's bestiary actually lists multiple mutations the beastman could be "blessed" with. These include tentacles, prehensile tails, and extra arms. The beastman is probably the creature with the most variety out of any bestiary I have ever seen. They don't have to be goats. They don't have to have beast heads. Take a human, mutate it in just about any way you desire, and send it into the forest to live with a "pack," and you'll have a beas...

B is for Boar

Boars and elks - when the hunted fight back History is full of reference to hunting accident. King died after a being hurt while hunting. This event is used in Games of Throne so don’t hesitate to transpose these stories to the Old World and its dark and dangerous forests. Hunters or travellers can easily become the hunted or get serious injuries while doing it. When a character goes hunting for food or travels through a forest he is taking risks. Even looking for rabbits might upset bigger animals. A wild animal is a dangerous beast for the unprepared. Even a hunter can be surprised by a wounded elks charging him. Boars are fast, heavy and have piercing fangs. Even if elks are vegetarian they possess sharp antlers. Here we focus on typical forests animals to highlight that even a vegetarian must be hunted with caution. This is not the only point by doing so a game master stress on the Grimm side of Warhammer. Firstly players will never look beastmen in the same way. They wil...

A is for Agitator

WarHammer Fantasy Roleplay's Old World is obviously not a dangerous enough setting, since there are multiple different careers whose sole purpose seems to be picking fights. Though the book states they "are active supporters of causes," the truth is that they often agitate to the point of violence. True to WarHammer pragmatism, the cause they argue is often the one that pays them best. An Agitator is great for the character who likes to cause fights, but does not necessarily want to participate in them...which is exactly why I want my next character to be a Halfling Agitator.

A is for Amoeba

Amoeba, leech and worm - no need to be giant to be challenging Most of the time Amoeba, leech and worm are giant sized opponents of the characters. Those invertebrates live in wet, putrid locations explored by our adventurers. For instance in sewage, swamps, caves and lairs. An inspired game master can challenge his players by changing this cliché. Adding some warp taint is of course an option but other effects are also welcome. Here is a short table listing some attributes to use in game. 1 Curing capacities. From injecting or producing anti-toxin, anti-venom or any other curing effect. Can be used as a component for brewing the potion that could save an important NPC. Useful for going beyond the typical herbal component. The animal might need to be kept alive and brought back to civilization for the cure to work. 2 Elemental traits or capacities. From fire worms and their inner furnace, to some swamp electrical amoeba the range of customization is very large. V...

April A-Z Blogging

I know the April A-Z blogging is not a new concept, but I have never taken part in it. Every time I read about it I become extremely interested. My free time is not what it once was, and I often find myself lacking time to put up a good gaming post. However, get ready! I have 26 labels from WarHammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st Edition that I want to blog about next month. They are mostly careers, supplemented with some creatures from the bestiary where there are gaps. When there were multiple options available, I tried to choose the one that was the most iconic to WarHammer (in my opinion). The posts aren't necessarily going to be very long, again due to that lack of free time I mentioned. They are not going to be as high quality as people who have been doing this for years. But they are going to get me the experience of the process.  I hope you might find some enjoyment therein.

WFRP: Helmgart Recovers? (8th Sitting)

Last night was the eighth sitting of our WarHammer 2e online campaign. Much has already happened, and much more is planned. My PC Mordrin Skorkinson, Troll Slayer. I've built up a little more backstory for him (which you don't get to know about until he's dead) as well as having his adventuring career to draw from for my roleplaying. He now wields a two handed war-hammer taken from a slain priest of Sigmar. Don't fret; the priest deserved it. He is looking for sheaths for his previous weapons, an orc Choppa and a sword taken from the body of a slain hobgoblin. My companions: A Brettonian Knight Errant A High Elf Scholar A Human Scribe A Wood Elf Wizard Apprentice Encounters and notes The party continues to enjoy the status of heroes for our key involvement in saving the town from purification by fire. We helped put out the fire and helped the town become purified by herbal remedy instead. The night of our celebration, the high elf pulled us aside a...

Contemplating April A-Z

I know April A-Z posts have been done and done and done, but I have never done it. I need a little kick in the pants in the idea department. My professional life overwhelms my free time, and all my gaming related activities are suffering. If I didn't expect too much from myself...maybe one paragraph at least...from each post, I just might be able to pull off an A-Z month. I hope I can do it. Thinking about it gets me excited.
